Albert Medal on Offer

Posted on Tue, 18 June 2013 by Phil Mussell - Medal News

The Albert Medal is one of the most aesthetically pleasing British Medal and the stories behind their awards are always poignant and often inspiring - such is the case with the Bronze Medal awarded to William Walters following the Abercan Colliery explosion of 1878. Walters was one of a nine man team who volunteered to descend into the pit, despite the fires raging and the obvious danger of fresh explosions - the team managed to rescue 82 of their fellow workers, although tragically 262 perished in the blast.

Walters' Albert Medal comes up for auction on July 8 at Fellows and Sons, Birmingham, with viewing in the previous three days. For further information call Abbey on 0121 212 5500
