At the Bowers and Merena "Boston Rarities Sale" on August 7, the rare 1794 silver dollar caused quite a stir when it sold for over one million dollars. With the bidding starting at $750,000, the lot quickly moved up in increments of $50,000 to its astounding final hammer price. The 1794 silver dollar was struck to replace the Spanish, English, Dutch and French coins that dominated local commerce at the time. Only 140 surviving examples of the coin are known throughout the world today. The Boston Rarities sale made a total of $9.2 million dollars.
