Elgar £20 to be withdrawn

Posted on Mon, 8 March 2010 by Phil Mussell - General News, Banknote News

It was, of course, inevitable - the Elgar £20 note first introduced in 1999 is to be withdrawn from circulation on June 30 2010. After that date it will cease to have "legal tender" status meaning there will be no obligation on the part of retailers to accept is as payment. Old notes will, of course, be able to be exchanged at most banks far into the future and the Bank of England is obliged to exchange any of their issued notes regardless of their age. In fact the Bank of England will still give you £5 for an old white fiver - but you'd be nuts to take them up on that one!
