George Cross Awarded

Lance Corporal Matthew Croucher of the Royal Marines has been awarded the George Cross for throwing himself on a grenade triggered by a booby trap in Helmund Province Afghanistan in February of this Year.

Upon triggering the trap he immediately dropped to the ground and lay across the grenade which detonated but, thanks to the fact that his pack was full, he escaped with no more than "a nosebleed and a headache". the three comrades whose lives he undoubtedly saved suffered only minor cuts and bruises.

The George Cross is, of course, awarded for exemplary acts of Courage whilst not "in the face of the enemy" - and is equalled only by the Victoria Cross in the order of precedence
