Paddington 50p - for £15,000?

Posted on Tue, 12 June 2018 by Phil Mussell - Coin News

Back in February it was announced that there was to be a 50p coin to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Paddington Bear, the Children's character created by Michael Bond. There's no official launch date for this coin but one has, apparently, already left the mint and is currently on ebay with bidding up around £15,300 (as of 4.00pm on June 12). Now we aren't sure if the coins are actually circulating or if this is a "rogue" that has somehow escaped Llantrisant or even if it's a forgery! If the latter then the seller could be in serious trouble but even if its not and the coin is just an early "escapee" the price makes no sense - after all these coins have been minted they will see the light of day eventually and when they do this particular specimen will be worth exactly the same as the others - that's 50p! So either someone is prepared to take a massive hit or the bidding might not be quite what it seems...
