Full steam ahead

Volume 41, Number 10, October 2004

Unbelievably it is Autumn again and a new numismatic season starts with a bang! A couple of months ago I mentioned the plethora of auctions that are planned for the next few weeks and with highlights that include the astounding Coenwulf gold penny that has recently come to light, the lost “Robinson” collection, the second section of the “Norwich” collection and the residual stock of the much respected and now sadly missed Patrick Finn, they promise to set our hobby alight, with record prices almost inevitable. In addition to the new names on the auction scene and the wonderful items being offered by the various houses both in the capital and further afield, it seems that there are new names appearing on the dealer front as well. It is always pleasing to see that the “old faces” (read in to that what you will!) are still around, this hobby of ours has something of a reputation for the longevity of the dealers – many of them have been in business for decades and are known and trusted by numismatists across the globe; however it is also gratifying to see that new players are coming in too. Some of these “new” faces are established dealers, hitherto with larger companies and now perhaps setting up own for the first time, whilst others are collectors who have decided to make their passion their job too - we wish them all the very best of luck and hope that their names and faces will soon become as familiar to us all as have all those whom we have been seeing at shows and within the pages of COIN NEWS for decades! Of course with the advent of so many new numismatic businesses so the number of adverts that are starting to appear in COIN NEWS increases too – which is excellent news for us as we, like all specialist magazines, do require a certain level of advertising revenue for our continued existence - however we are aware that pushing out the articles and features our readers love in favour of “just more adverts” will not necessarily be a popular choice (although the advertisements we feature are often cited by readers as one of the principal factors for them buying the magazine!) and so we are happy to announce that this issue is actually our BIGGEST EVER – 96 pages crammed full of all your old favourites and some exciting new features too. New features that include the start of an ongoing “Notebook” series looking in depth at some of the most beautiful and exclusive coins in the world – watch out in coming months for some stunning photography of, and insights into, coins that most of us can only ever dream of seeing let alone owning! So t is that we start the new numismatic season full steam ahead – the biggest ever COIN NEWS, a fantastic assortment coming up at a huge variety of auctions, new businesses appearing as if by magic and few if any of the old faces “fading away”, new collaborations, new ventures and, it seems, new collectors, both young and old coming into the hobby; the news is all positive and the coin hobby it appears is again on the up – long may it remain so.
